Weapons seized after low-speed chase

There was high drama at low speeds as police were led on a chase on Friday by the driver leading a procession to a Dunedin gang member's tangi.

Police increased their presence in the wider Dunedin area on Friday as a group of gang members traveled in procession from Balclutha to Corstorphine.

It ended with three people being arrested and charged with failing to stop for police, dangerous driving and obstruction.

Dunedin Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said two vehicles refused to stop for police after signaling the pair to stop after the man driving a green Ford leading the procession suffered a burnout in Blackhead Rd.

Immediately after the burnout, members of the procession blocked police access to the vehicle, causing two vehicles to have a head-to-head collision.

The occupants then left their vehicles in Blackhead Rd and entered two other vehicles.

As soon as the green Ford left Blackhead Rd, police came through and overtook the car in Middleton Rd, Corstorphine.

This led to a car chase down Glasgow St in South Dunedin.

The vehicles pursued by police did not initially breach the 50km/h speed limit and adhered to traffic rules during the police chase, Sergeant General Bond said.

As they entered King Edward St, the vehicles turned onto Carey Ave, where a woman driving a black Mazda Atenza allegedly stopped to prevent police from following the green Ford.

The man driving the Ford then drove in the wrong direction onto the one-way Glasgow St and continued onto Neville St, where police caught up with them.

Knives and brass knuckles were found in the vehicle, Snr said. Sergeant Bond.

The 23-year-old driver of the green Ford was charged with failure to stop, sustained loss of traction and possession of offensive weapons.

Police overtook the black Mazda Atenza on the way to the cemetery and an 18-year-old woman was arrested for failure to stop and obstruction.

The procession started at 11am, with the vehicles being followed by police all the way to Corstorphine.

At 12.40pm a silver Holden Captiva began crossing the center line in Gladstone Rd in Mosgiel, but not into oncoming traffic.

The 44-year-old man then drove through a red light at the Gladstone and Quarry Rd intersections in Mosgiel.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle but it failed to stop for police and then continued onto the highway where it was stopped at the weigh station in Saddle Hill.

The man was charged with failure to stop and drive while prohibited, and his vehicle was seized.

The convoy continued along the southern highway, traveling about 50 km/h in the 100 zone in both lanes, causing a traffic jam behind them, Sergeant General Bond said.

They then turned off at Green Island and headed down Brighton Rd before continuing onto Blackhead Rd.
