Officers from the Garda Technical Bureau are carrying out searches around a private property and local pub in the village of Knockanure this morning after a man was stabbed and died last night.
A murder investigation is now underway in North Kerry following the shocking incident which is now believed to have occurred in a private apartment.
The village is currently in lockdown with no public access while gardaí conduct their investigation. A scene has been cordoned off around a house and the local pub, much of the garda, is concentrating on this area.
The man was stabbed several times during the incident in the quiet rural area where there is little to no crime.
The Kerryman has spoken to locals in the village who said they never expected something like this to happen in such a peaceful area.
The victim is known in the village and his parents both live nearby. He is described as a 'man with a heart of gold'. It is understood that he has several siblings living abroad.
Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to an alleged attack in the Knockanure village area at around 12.30am this morning. Upon arrival, a man in his 40s was found with fatal injuries.
He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to University Hospital Kerry mortuary for post-mortem.
The local coroner has been notified and the services of the state pathologist have been requested. The scene is currently being held for investigation by the Garda Technical Bureau.
A man in his 30s has been arrested in connection with this incident and is currently being held under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a Garda station in the Kerry Division.
A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been set up at Listowel Garda station.
Gardaí are appealing to the public for information regarding this incident.
All road users who were traveling between midnight and 1am in the area of the village of Knockanure, located between Listowel and Moyvane, and who may have CCTV footage (including dashcam), are asked to make it available.
