Rebekah Vardy, 42, lost her high-profile defamation claim against Coleen Rooney, 38, in July 2022 when Ms Justice Steyn ruled that Ms Rooney's viral social media post accusing Ms Vardy of leaking her private information to the press “ was essentially true.”
In October of the same year, the judge ruled in a judgment that Ms Vardy must pay 90% of Ms Rooney's costs.
Mrs Rooney, the wife of former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney, incurred total costs of more than £2 million, but £350,000 of that had already been raised before the trial in May.
Ms Vardy, who is married to Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy, was ordered to pay £800,000 of the costs bill in November.
However, this was not the final bill for Ms Rooney's total costs and the case will return to the High Court in London for a hearing before a specialist costs judge.
These judges assess the costs and expenses incurred during civil cases and decide how much successful parties can recover, and can reduce costs if necessary or if they are deemed unreasonable.
In the viral social media post in October 2019, which was at the heart of the defamation claim, Ms Rooney said she had carried out a months-long “sting operation” and accused Ms Vardy of leaking information about her private life to the press.
Ms Rooney publicly claimed Ms Vardy's account was the source behind three stories in The Sun newspaper containing false details she posted on her private Instagram profile – in which she traveled to Mexico for a 'gender selection' procedure, her plan to return to the TV, and the basement that flooded her house.
After the high-profile trial, Ms Steyn ruled in Ms Rooney's favour, ruling that it was “likely” that Ms Vardy's former agent Caroline Watt had passed information to The Sun and that she “knew and approved of this behaviour”.
The judge added that Ms Vardy was “actively” involved, “redirecting Ms Watt to the private Instagram account, sending her screenshots of Ms Rooney's messages, drawing attention to items of potential interest to the press, and answered additional questions from the press through Mrs Watt”.
Tuesday's hearing before senior costs judge Andrew Gordon-Saker will start at 10.30am.
