Mr. Kennedy opened up about the fight against prostate cancer on his podcast “after much thought.” Opinions are important with Adrian and Jeremy.
The radio star hopes his story will highlight the “importance of staying up to date with health checks and screening”.
After his show with Jeremy Dixon was off air for a few days, the duo revealed that it is due to Adrian's cancer diagnosis that he is “dealing with that behind the scenes”.
“As a team, our priority is for Adrian to recover quickly and get better soon,” they wrote on Facebook, adding that it has been “a strange few weeks” on the podcast.
“Thank you to everyone who got in touch to pass on their well wishes,” she added.
Earlier this year, the Dubliner visited a doctor for a regular check-up.
“I did blood work and the doctor discovered my PSA level during the blood test [Prostate-Specific Antigen] was slightly increased,” he said.
“So early this year the doctor sent me for a CAT scan and found that my prostate was slightly enlarged, but nothing to worry about. He then sent me for a biopsy and about eight weeks ago I was diagnosed with prostate cancer stated.
“I fell off the chair, the blood drained from me. And within an hour I was in this studio making a podcast,” he said, adding “it was even worse” because he was alone when he received the news .
He said his two options are radiotherapy, which lasts about seven weeks, or having the prostate removed.
That's why Mr Kennedy underwent surgery last Friday at Beaumont Hospital to remove his prostate.
“When it comes to prostate cancer, I'm actually a very young man,” he said.
“I'm glad it was caught by fluke, but it was caught early enough.
“Doctors don't think it has spread, but they obviously need to do more biopsies.”
He said he is now recovering and hopes to “clear everything up”, while also calling on people over 40 to have their PSA levels checked.
Many listeners of the podcast shared their well wishes for the radio legend.
“Keep fighting Adrian. You will get through this with all the support you deserve. You are part of our family, we have listened to you since time immemorial,” someone wrote on Facebook.
Another person added: “Adrian is a really good guy and a great presenter. Wish him a good recovery.”
