The Vanishing Of Ethan Carter VR will be removed from Steam on May 31st.
Originally released in 2014 for flatscreen platforms, The Disappearance of Ethan Carter is a horror adventure where you play as a paranormal investigator investigating the disappearance of the titular character. While PC VR support arrived later as paid DLCdeveloper The Astronauts confirmed that the DLC is being removed as they “can no longer support it”.
Here is the full statement:
Dear players,
On Friday (31.05.2024), we will remove the option for new players to purchase the VR version of Vanishing of Ethan Carter. If you already own the title, nothing will change and you can still access it as before.
This decision has been made because we can no longer support this version of the game and therefore cannot guarantee that it will work with new VR headsets and operating systems.
However, it is unclear whether The Vanishing Of Ethan Carter will also be removed from the film Rift Shop, which combines the flat-screen game and VR support in one package. We've reached out to The Astronauts for clarification and will update this article when we know more.
One of the earliest modern VR experiences available, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter officially only supports Rift and HTC Vive headsets on Steam. VR gameplay offers a 'Normal Mode' with full freedom of movement and a 'Comfort Mode' designed for beginners.
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter's base game remains unaffected and is available at Steam for $20. You'll need that to get the VR DLCwhich costs $10 and is available until May 31, 2024.
