New roller coaster closed due to 'unforeseen circumstances' | UK | News

A rollercoaster at a favorite British theme park has been closed due to “unforeseen circumstances”, leaving bosses unable to confirm exactly when it will reopen.

Thorpe Park billed its previously upcoming Hyperia roller coaster as the “tallest and fastest” in the country, boasting that it could exceed speeds of 80 mph while delivering rides 230 feet high.

The park's newest attraction opened on Friday, but was forced to close after lasting just one day.

Bosses suddenly announced they would be ending the ride this weekend, with a statement released on Tuesday about their move.

And the long-awaited new roller coaster will not be rideable again until early next month.

Announcing the news on Tuesday, a spokesperson for Thorpe Park said that “despite our best efforts” the attraction would not reopen until June.

They said: “Despite our best efforts, we are unable to reopen Hyperia before Saturday 8 June.

“We will continue to do everything we can to open the ride earlier and will ensure the latest updates are provided via our socials and website.

The spokesperson added: “We are truly sorry for the disappointment we know this will cause.”

They would not elaborate on the reasons behind the shock closure, but told a social media user that the ride had undergone “strict security checks” before opening last week.

The spokesperson added that staff were working hard to ensure Hyperia would “be back at full capacity soon”.

Anyone affected by the closures can rebook a seat on the ride before it reopens.

Visitors to Thorpe Park who had pre-booked a visit until June 7 can change their booking online.

And anyone who came by on Saturday – when the ride was unexpectedly closed – is entitled to a free day return.

Reports from the opening day suggested that queues for the rollercoaster were huge, with around a five-hour wait for those hoping to brave the ride.
