'Screaming down the Southern Motorway': Teen driver caught driving double the speed limit

A Christchurch teenager has had his Holden Commodore seized and charged with dangerous driving after he was caught driving at an “absolutely stupid” speed on the Southern Motorway.

Christchurch Highway Patrol Constable Scott Agnew had just finished writing a ticket about 12.55pm on Wednesday when the Commodore came “screaming down the Southern Motorway” at more than double the legal speed limit.

“It was absolutely crazy, crazy speed.

“There are a lot of people on that highway at 1 p.m. on a weekday; an accident at that speed would have been catastrophic.”

The vehicle was then located in a car park in Rolleston, where police found two witnesses shouting at the suspected driver as he checked a damaged wheel.

“This was a terrible speed, putting other road users in extreme danger.

He is very lucky, as are all the other people who were on the road with him,” Agnew said.

“As a driver, the decisions you make affect not only you and those in your vehicle, but everyone else on the road around you.”

An 18-year-old Christchurch man is due to appear in court charged with dangerous driving.

His Commodore has been seized for 28 days and his license will be suspended.
