In minority actor Hugo Dennis teased a huge – and potentially devastating – storyline ahead of the sitcom's long-awaited return.
Last week the BBC announced the show, which follows the lives of the chaotic Brockman familywas revived for a festive special.
The one-off 40-minute episode follows Hugh's character Peter and Sue (Claire Skinner) as they gather their family to try to have a traditional Christmas.
However, op GMB Today, in a heartbreaking twist, Mock the Week star Hugh, 62, suggested the family had split.
Discussing Outnumbered's comeback, he said: 'It'll be strange, won't it, because I don't think we live together as a family anymore.
“There are a lot of different things to think about and one of the great things about the show was portraying life as it really was.”
Hugh also said he “read in the paper” that Peter and Sue were grandparents in the Christmas special, but he did not confirm or deny the rumor.
He said: 'It's great that it's coming back. We're doing this 40-minute special, but we don't really know anything about it.
'We read in the newspaper that we have a grandchild, but we don't know which child it is.'
Hugh will also appear in Outnumbered alongside his real-life girlfriend Claire. In 2018, the couple confirmed they were dating after splitting from their respective partners.
It will be the first time they have starred in a show together since announcing their relationship.
When asked by GMB co-host Richard Madeley what it was like filming with his 'missus', Hugh replied that he 'didn't know yet' as production starts in November.
In addition to Claire, the show's original child cast Fabrics Drew-Honey as eldest son Jake, Daniel Roche as middle child Ben, and Ramona Marquez as daughter, Karen, return.
Outnumbered was first broadcast in five series from 2007 to 2014.
A final Christmas special was then broadcast on Boxing Day 2016, which attracted an average of seven million viewers has had fans begging for more since.
The show became beloved for its comedic yet realistic portrayal of family life, making child actors Tyger, Daniel and Ramona famous.
All scenes with the children were semi-improvised. While the adult cast members were given scripts, the young ones were given last-minute instructions by the writers, creating hilarity thanks to the unpredictability of what they might say.
As a result, the series won several awards, including from the Comedy.co.uk awards, the Royal Television Society, the British Comedy Awards and the Broadcasting Press Guild.
Outnumbered returns to the BBC later this year.
