Climate protesters in Germany close airports | World | News

Environmental activists have caused chaos in Germany by clinging to the runways of four airports.

A total of eight people are involved in the protests, the group said in a statement. The protests are focused on Berlin, Cologne/Bonn, Nuremberg and Stuttgart.

It was stated: “Air traffic is currently suspended or restricted at all four locations.

“Two people in orange safety vests each expressed their opposition by holding banners reading 'Oil kills' and 'Sign the treaty'. The runways were not entered.”

“Protest at the airports of BER, Stuttgart, Nuremberg and Cologne/Bonn!

“8 people are currently disrupting air traffic. The climate disaster is so much more terrifying than any threat of punishment: it is destroying the future of us all! Our very existence is at stake!”

PolitizeiMittelfranken said about Nuremberg: “Flight operations have been suspended.

“Efforts are already underway to remove people from the runway.”

Cologne/Bonn Airport also confirmed that all flights had been suspended. The airport's official X account states: “On Thursday, 15 August 2024, unauthorized persons gained access to the airside area of the airport site in Cologne/Bonn.

“Flight operations are currently suspended due to the police action.

“More information will follow as it becomes available.”

Both airports have now resumed flights.

Despite Last Generation's claims, operations in Berlin and Stuttgart did not appear to have been affected.

A photo shared by Deutsche Well shows a hole cut in the fence near Cologne/Bonn, apparently by the intruders.

According to Tagesspiegel, Last Generation also attacked the SPD party headquarters in Berlin with orange paint.

Last Generation was founded three years ago. The name refers to the fact that the activists see themselves as the last generation before the earth reaches the tipping point.

In Germany, protests focused primarily on blocking roads and runways in an attempt to influence transportation policy.
