Tax officials seize bags and contraband worth €390,000 with the help of sniffer dog Toby

Tax officials discovered 37,600 cigarettes of various brands, with an estimated value of €31,000. This would have cost the treasury a potential loss of €24,800 during the raids.

Cash worth €2,935 and a quantity of alcohol were also seized, as well as cash worth €57,500, including €42,102 and £13,240.

Runners seized

Both seizures were made as a result of intelligence operations and with the assistance of Detective Dog Toby.

Two women have been questioned in connection with the attacks.

“The money is believed to be the proceeds of, or intended for use in, criminal activity and is being held by the Inland Revenue in accordance with the Proceeds of Crime Act. Inland Revenue officers have been issued with a three-month remand order for any amount of money found,” a spokesman said.

Alcohol seized

During a parcel check in Dublin, tax officials seized 9.5kg of herbal cannabis, worth almost €189,000.

Various quantities of other illegal drugs were also seized, with an estimated value of approximately €9,400.

The illegal drugs were discovered in packages originating from the United States, the United Kingdom, India, Canada, Spain and Thailand and were destined for various addresses in the country.

Cash seized

Officers also seized goods, including shopping bags and packages, with an estimated value of more than €101,000.

The goods were seized due to intellectual property rights infringements.

A spokesperson said the investigation into all seizures is still ongoing.

“These seizures are part of Revenue’s ongoing work targeting smuggling and shadow economy activities. If businesses or members of the public have information about smuggling, they can contact Revenue confidentially on 1800 295 295.”
