Dáíth Ó Sé 'certainly does not rule out' a political career in the future

The RTÉ presenter, who is preparing to host Rose of Tralee, which starts its 14th edition next Friday, has said he is “interested in politics”.

Responding to recent reports that former RTÉ journalist Gráinne Seoige could be considered for Fianna Fáil, he said: “No better woman.”

When asked if he would consider a career change in the future, he said: “I do have an interest in politics, but I wouldn't put myself forward for such a job at this time.”

“But I certainly wouldn't rule it out in the future.

“As a Gaelgeoir it is very important to have a Gaelgeoir in central government,” he said during his speech at the launch of Rose of Tralee at the Airfield Estate in Dublin.

Speaking to the Sunday Independent Earlier this week, Ó Sé said he knows that every presenter's career has an expiration date.

“One day they'll tap me on the shoulder and say, 'Dáithí, we're hunting you, you're gone.' And any presenter who doesn't believe that is mistaken.

“Everyone has to deal with it sooner or later, so I'm always prepared for it.

“I've been on television for years and I've enjoyed it immensely. So if someone came up to me and said, 'It's over,' I'd say, 'You know what? I had a great time.'

“It's not like I'm waiting for that day to come… I have no illusions that it will come. It happens to everyone,” he told the Sunday Independent.

Mr Ó Sé also gave an update on his knee injury, saying he is taking it “a bit easier”.

“No sudden movements,” he said.

“I was taken to the hospital. I basically moved my kneecap to the other side of my knee, so they had to put it back in.

“Luckily nothing was broken or anything, it didn't hurt at all, very strange, but it's just healing very, very slowly.

“It was swollen, the swelling has gone down, but I was on two crutches, one crutch, and now no crutches at all. But I might have one for show.”
