Parent criticizes new school principal for suggesting girls who don’t wear tights are ‘indecent’

A PARENT taunted the new principal of a school after she sent a text urging girls in skirts to wear black tights out of “modesty and decency”.

The mother, whose daughter is a student, said the “sexist” wording suggested girls were being immodest and indecent for not wearing them.

She added that the demand for black tights was not in line with the official uniform policy of the Longfield Academy, Darlington, Co Durham.

The official uniform policy on the school’s website says, “If tights are worn, they must be plain and unpatterned,” meaning that they are not required to be worn.

Principal Angela Sweeten said a formal consultation on uniform was underway at the 891 high school.

She added: “Over the past few weeks, there have been a number of informal conversations about school uniforms.

“This has resulted in me writing to parents/carers on Friday 24th June to initiate a formal consultation exercise.

“The process also includes input from students and staff.

“Any changes to the policy will be communicated to the school community before the summer holidays.”
