Food can spoil quickly before you can use it, which is a waste of your money.
The average household could save hundreds of pounds a year by making better use of their freezer, according to device company AO.com.
Here are some surprising ways you can extend the shelf life of your most commonly wasted foods.
FRUIT AND VEGETABLES: Not everyone thinks about freezing fruit and veg, but according to AO you could save £272 a year doing so.
Kate Hall, food waste expert and author of The Full Freezer Method, says: “They don't defrost properly, but frozen Fruits can be pureed into smoothies or used in baking, while vegetables can be used in cooked dishes.”
To prevent clumping, freeze on a lined baking sheet before transferring to a freezer bag. Ideally, blanch the vegetables beforehand and cook them straight from the freezer for best quality.
An exception are potatoes, which cannot be frozen raw.
Kate suggests making a large batch of puree to freeze. Reheat in a pan or microwave.
EGGS: If you throw them away on average every two to three weeks, you could save £64 a year if you use them instead.
“People are always surprised when they find out they can freeze eggs,” says Kate.
To do this, you need to break away from the shell and whisk everything together before freezing in usable portions in a freezer bag.
MILK: Consider storing it in the refrigerator instead of the door. This can add up to three days to the shelf life.
You can also freeze milk, saving you £33 a year.
It's best to do this in manageable portions. Kate adds: “Milk can sometimes look yellow and can split when it thaws.
“Don’t let this scare you, it’s just the fats separating from the water. Just give it a good shake.”
BREAD: Freeze your bread in slices so you can toast it straight from the freezer. This will save you £72 a year.
To defrost, it is best to store the bread wrapped. This prevents it from drying out.
