Tourists and bystanders screamed in fear as a plane crashed into the sea during a popular air show in France.
The terrifying incident occurred around 5pm on August 16, with the pilot's body found a short time later, according to local news website Ici.
The air show was held to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Provence landings and featured aircraft from the Patrouille de France, the precision aerobatics demonstration unit of the French Air and Space Force.
Footage shared on social media shows the terrifying moment the plane crashed at the event near Saint Tropez in southern France.
The show has been canceled due to the “tragic circumstances,” officials said.
Officials from the Prefect du Var, the local authority responsible for the Var region, added: “The pilot's body has been recovered.”
According to the French Air Force, the aircraft involved did not belong to the aerobatics team Partrouille de France, but to a Fouga Magister from an association.
They added: “The pilots and the entire air force community would like to express their solidarity during this difficult time.”
A spokesperson for the Var district added: “Rescue operations to find the pilot are currently being coordinated by the Mediterranean Regional Operational Surveillance and Rescue Centre (CROSS).
“Equipment from the Var department's fire and rescue service and the maritime gendarmerie are being deployed in the area.”
Hundreds of spectators gathered to watch the air show, which was held to mark the 80th anniversary of the Provence landings, when Allied forces invaded the region in 1944.
