Just days after a storm caused flooding, landslides and road closures in Christchurch, the city was able to experience another downpour.

Christchurch City Council head of three waters, Helen Beaumont, said parts of Christchurch and the Banks Peninsula could get up to 50mm of rain Saturday night and Sunday morning.

“If you live in an area prone to flooding, take sensible precautions to protect your property and assets,” she said.

“We all hope the rain passes without causing further problems, but residents should be prepared for the possibility of more flooding and slips, especially given how saturated the ground is from the rain earlier this week.”

Beaumont said they were pouring rainwater into the Heathcote River from flood storage systems ahead of Saturday’s storm forecast. City officials also checked stormwater systems across the district.

She called on residents to check nearby storm grids for the new downpour.

“We can’t check all the schedules in the city, so we would really appreciate if residents could take a few minutes to check the schedules outside their property in good weather.

“If there are leaves blocking the grates, we’d appreciate it if you could scoop them up and put them in your green wheelie bin.”

MetService forecaster John Law confirmed more rain was on the way for Canterbury.

“The heaviest rainfall will be in Marlborough and Nelson, but more rain will fall in Christchurch and Canterbury.

“It’s not the amount of rain that a watch or warning will trigger, but with the amount of rain and flooding you’ve had, it’s something to be aware of.”

He said Christchurch could get between 15 and 20mm of rain Saturday night and Sunday morning, but the rain would clear up on Sunday.
