Two people have been arrested following an alleged firearms incident in Kaikohe on Wednesday morning.

Senior Sergeant Mark Dalzell, a Far North area detective, said armed police responded to a report of a gunshot around 10 a.m.

On arrival, police found an illegal firearm and the men, aged 21 and 49, were arrested.

The two men were set to appear in Kaikohe court on Thursday on a series of charges, including careless firing of a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm, Dalzell said.

“The Noordland Police continue to hold accountable those perpetrators involved in gun-related violence in the Far North.”

Dalzell said the arrests followed a string of other police officers arrested in recent months over gun violence in the Far North.

The incident is not directly linked to gang tensions in the area, he said.

“We have an extremely low tolerance for antisocial behavior or violence in our communities and we welcome anyone with information about those illegally in possession of firearms to come forward.”
