The father of world champion and record holder Tobi Amusan has urged Nigerians to ignore US track legend Michael Johnson’s comments after his daughter’s exploits at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon.
Earlier this week, Amusan won her semifinal when she crossed the finish line in 12.12 seconds, breaking the previous best of 12.20 seconds set by American Kendra Harrison in 2016.
But Michael Johnson, who won four Olympic gold medals and 8 gold medals at the World Championships over the course of his career, questioned her accuracy and timing.
This sparked reaction from Nigerians on Twitter, accusing him of ‘black racism’
In a conversation with The PUNCHAmusan’s father stated that the American’s comments should be ignored.
“You know the western world and how they behave, you should know what they are,” Kehinde said.
“I don’t feel involved with what he said after the race because God did what He had to do. I don’t care what anyone says about the timing, I feel like the western world is like that, but they’re not God.
So he is entitled to his opinion. I won’t take it as an insult because I just believe these blacks do.”
Also, Amusan’s youth coach, Ayodele Solaja, who coached the 25-year-old while she was a student of Our Lady of Apostles, Ijebu Ode, said Johnson and other Americans were jealous of Amosun after her performance.
“Everyone in the US, including Michael Johnson, is just wallowing in jealousy because of Tobi’s performance,” Solaja said. The PUNCH.
“Tobi has done what no Nigerian could do in the World Championship.”
