A passer-by gave life-saving first aid to a man after he was stabbed in central Wellington on Thursday evening.

The 48-year-old victim and his associate became involved in a “prolonged argument” with another small group outside Wesley Methodist church on Taranaki St, before the man was stabbed in the leg, police said in a statement.

“He was taken to hospital and is now recovering in the ICU after surgery on the wound. The male perpetrator left the scene along York St after the incident and police are seeking the public’s help to identify him.”

The Reverend Nicola Teague Grundy of the Wesley Methodist Church said no one from the church was involved in the incident, who had no services Thursday night. She said the church was working to assist the police in their investigation.

The assailant is described as medium-sized, about 5 feet tall, wearing a dark baseball cap and a light-colored hoodie.

A white Mitsubishi L300 bus parked in the church parking lot took off shortly after the stabbing and police suspect the occupants may have witnessed the incident and are asked to contact police.
