Princes St, 1861 — everything changes now

Princes St, Dunedin in 1861, 1868, Dunedin, by Burton Brothers, William Meluish. Te Papa (O.000757)

This popular path Meluish took his photo of was later replaced by wooden steps when roads were widened or lowered all around, and then through the masonry in 1927 Dowling St steps we know today. Vegetable shows the surviving portion of the Jones and Williamson store.

Today the openwork staircase of the Standard Building (1875), shown above, retains the south double-gabled wall of the Jones and Williams Store shown in these two Meluish photos, and a wall of the store building then built just to the east. Photo courtesy of Ted Daniels.
