Boris Johnson urges NATO allies to ‘act’ as the West faces mounting threats – ‘Dig deep!’ † politics | News

The prime minister landed in the Spanish capital for a North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit, after meeting G7 leaders in Bavaria. Johnson is expected to announce that the UK will expand its military presence in Estonia and call on NATO allies to do more to invest in defence.

In a speech, Mr Johnson will say: “The NATO alliance keeps our people safe every day.

“But over the next ten years, the threats around us will only increase.

“We need allies – allies allies – to dig deep to restore deterrence and ensure defense over the next decade.

“The two percent was always meant to be a floor, not a ceiling, and allies must continue to grow during this time of crisis.”

He will add: “I remain incredibly proud of the tremendous contribution Defense is making to the UK and the world.

“Defense of the empire is the first mission of any government.

But more than that, defense is the beating heart of the UK.

“Almost every family knows someone who has served our country or worked in our thriving defense industry.

However, only nine of the 30 Member States meet the requirement.

Earlier this year, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz confirmed that Berlin is aiming to meet the two percent target after Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
