Guide to dates and times plus important events to watch out for

The Commonwealth Games in Birmingham kicked off on Thursday, July 28 with the opening ceremony – and you can scroll down for a full day-to-day schedule for the event; all times are BST and subject to change.

But first, let’s run through the Games’ 10 must-watch events.

Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony began on Thursday evening. And, as you’d expect, the proceedings had a distinctly local flavor with Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight producing the show, and bands like Duran Duran and Black Sabbath.

10 Commonwealth Events You Just Have To See

Triathlon: individual final men and women, Friday 29 July

Chances are the first English Commonwealth Games medals will fall on the opening morning, thanks to Olympic silver medalists Alex Yee and Georgia Taylor-Brown. The pair will then combine the next day, when England will hope to win team gold.

Cycling: women’s team pursuit final, Friday 29 July

Laura Kenny is England’s foremost cycling name as she returns to the scene of her first Olympic triumphs at the London velodrome. In the 10 years since those 2012 Games, she won five Olympic and seven world titles, became a lady and had a son. However, her build-up was hampered by medical issues this year.

Gymnastics: ladies individual all-round, Sunday 31 July

In the absence of three-time Olympic champion Max Whitlock, Claudia Fragapane will headline the Birmingham gymnastics host nation. Fragapane won four Commonwealth gold medals in 2014, starred in Strictly Come Dancing and missed the 2018 Games through injury.

Swimming: men’s 100m breaststroke final, Sunday 31 July

Three-time Olympic Champion Adam Peaty was unable to defend his 50 and 100m breaststroke world titles last month after breaking his foot in May. He has barely competed this year and admits he has no idea how he will fare in Birmingham, but more gold medals would come as no surprise.

Para-athletics: T33/34 100m final ladies, Tuesday 2 August

Birmingham 2022 offers para events in a range of sports, allowing Hannah Cockroft to win the only medal missing from her collection. The wheelchair racer has won seven Paralympic and 11 world titles, as well as multiple European gold medals, but this should be her first Commonwealth triumph.

Lawn Bowls: Men’s Singles Final, Saturday, August 6

In his everyday life, Nick Brett is a humble civil servant. But in his sporting life, Brett is known – somewhat bizarrely – as the Brad Pitt of lawn bowls. At the 2020 World Indoor Championships, he threw arguably the most famous bowl of all time with an insane shot that was so good it went viral worldwide.
