Irish people have been warned of the increased threat of flying this summer.
lies are traditionally a scourge in hot weather, so during the summer months, when the weather improves and the temperature rises, they will reproduce and spread.
Pest rep, Rentokil, registered a 16 percent increase in calls in the period between January and July 2022 compared to the same period last year.
The top five counties responsible for fly infestations from January to July 2022 include Cork, accounting for 18 percent of calls, Kerry for 15 percent, Sligo 14 percent, Galway 11 percent and Mayo 9 percent.
Flies pose the threat of spreading bacteria such as E-coli and campylobacter on humans when they come into contact with food.
Rentokil encouraged people to take a number of measures to prevent the presence of flies in their homes.
These tips include repairing leaky faucets and clogged drains where water can collect, covering food, keeping bins, sinks and food areas clean, installing screens on windows, keeping windows and doors closed at night, and consider installing a fly killer.
The advanced technical field advisor at Rentokil said it is important for people to be aware of the increased flight activity at this time of year.
Richard Faulkner said: “Flies can contaminate or spread food, so it’s important to make sure all food in your property is properly covered and stored and not left out in the open.”
“In addition, these insects can be a nuisance when found in swarms as their collective droppings can create a stench and stain fabrics and walls. In addition, their presence can pose the threat of violating food or hygiene regulations for businesses.
“In terms of protection against these pests, the most effective methods are to put mosquito nets on doors and windows and use an LED fly killer unit, such as the Lumnia LED fly killer.”
If home or business owners suspect they have a fly infestation, they should first identify the source of the infestation.
Rentokil recommends looking around doors, windows, electrical outlets, eaves, ducts, cable openings and vents to help determine if your property has a flying problem.
Keeping bird feeders clean and removing bird food before dusk can also help reduce flies and remove clutter in the home and yard.
