How do I claim my stimulus check? Step by step guide

An estimated 10 million Americans had not received the stimulus check they were entitled to by mid-September, a March report found.

The Inspector General of the Treasury Department of the Tax and Customs Administration prepared the report and revealed several factors as to why payments may be deferred.

Most people received their stimulus checks by check or direct deposit.

Others received them in the form of prepaid debit cards, and some considered these cards junk mail and sadly threw them away.

TIGTA’s report said manually verifying stimulus claims and debit card policies has delayed payments for as many as 10 million people.

If you missed your payments, you can go to: GetYourRefund.org to claim the funds.

If you typically don’t file a federal income tax return, here’s the: step-by-step process you must fill in to claim your money.

First you need to provide the following information:

  • Step 1: Full name, current mailing address and email address.
  • Step 2: Date of birth and valid social security number.
  • Step 3: Bank account number, type and routing number, if you have one.
  • Step 4: Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) you received from the IRS earlier this year, if you have one.
  • Taxpayers who have previously been given an Identity Protection PIN but have lost it must use the Obtaining an IP PIN tool to get their numbers.
  • Step 5: Driver’s license or state-issued ID, if you have one.
  • Step 6: For each eligible child in 2019: Name, Social Security Number or Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number and their relationship to you or your spouse.

Filers cannot be claimed as dependent on another taxpayer and have adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less if they are single.

If you are the head of the household, you must have an income of $112,250 or less, $150,000 or less if you are married and filing a joint return.

Reduced payments are available for those who earn more than the above amounts, but still earn less than $99,000 per year or less for individuals.

If you are the head of the household, you must have an income of $136,500 per year or less and $198,000 per year or less for filing a marriage declaration jointly.

Use the IRS Non-Filers tool to claim your stimulus check

Use the Non-Filers option to enter your information if you do not normally file a federal income tax return for 2019, 2020, or 2021 for any reason, including:

  • Your income is less than $12,200.
  • You are married together and together your income is less than $24,400.
  • You have no income.

Do not use this tool if you need to file a return for 2021 if you have been granted an extension and plan to file before October.

This includes those who file a tax return to get a refund, even though they are not required to file a tax return.

Using the tool instead of filing your 2021 return will delay processing your tax return and receiving any tax refund.
