The Apple AirPods Pro 2 wireless earbuds have been rumored for over a year, but Apple made no announcements at the WWDC developer conference or at the iPhone 13 launch in 2021. While we don’t have concrete information about the upcoming AirPods Pro 2, we do have some leaks that give us a good idea of what to expect in the coming months, leading up to the iPhone 14 announcement in September.
Prices & Availability
All the leaks and rumors suggest that the AirPods Pro 2 wireless earbuds will be released sometime in the third quarter of 2022. Numerous leakers, including Ming-Chi Kuo, have predicted that AirPods Pro 2 would be officially released sometime in 2022. This matches our prediction to launch along with the new iPhone 14 series, sometime in the fall, in September or October.
The original AirPods Pro launched for $249 / £239, and rumors suggest Apple could keep the same price for the second generation. However, given current world events and high inflation, we wouldn’t be surprised if we saw an adjusted price tag resulting in a higher price.

Design
The new AirPods Pro 2 earbuds are expected to be somewhat similar to the current ones AirPods (3rd generation) Earphones. New design renderings suggest that the charging case will remain largely unchanged, although it looks like it will have speaker holes in addition to the existing Lightning port. These speakers will reportedly allow iPhone users to play a sound to locate misplaced and lost AirPods so they can easily locate their earbuds. The left side may also contain a hole for a lanyard.

Specifications, Features and Sensors
The AirPods Pro 2 wireless earbuds are expected to be powered by a new Apple H1 chipset, which is expected to improve performance, battery life and reduce audio listening latency. Recent rumors also suggest that the chipset would support a new Adaptive Active Noise Canceling feature, which could automatically adjust based on the user’s environment and environment. Other rumors also claim we’ll see new drivers, and a self-adjusting equalization method to improve spatial audio and other existing features.
The new earbuds are also expected to include new hearing aid capabilities. It’s not entirely clear how this would work in practice, but the hardware and software could work together to improve audio reproduction in real time, allowing people to hear better. The current generation of AirPods Pro earbuds have already been used by many people and we wouldn’t be surprised if Apple focused more on these features. That said, there is very little information out there, so we recommend taking this with a grain of salt.
The current generation of AirPods and AirPods Pro earbuds do not support Lossless audio support because the Bluetooth technology is limited to the AAC codec. Leaks and reliable sources claim that AirPods Pro 2 may be equipped with a new Apple Lossless audio codec called ALAC. The new codec is expected to bring significant improvements to the way audio is played.
Heart rate detection and body temperature sensors
Previous rumors have claimed that AirPods Pro 2 could have a new heart rate and body temperature sensor to improve health measurements and track fitness activities. According to_Mark Gurman, the second-generation Apple earbuds will lack these features because the prototypes are not yet ready for mass production. The new sensors were rumored to offer more health-related features, and the additional heart rate sensor was expected to increase accuracy for sports activity tracking. The new sensors are expected to appear in a future generation of AirPods Pro earbuds.
AirPods Pro 2: USB-C
The Rumor has it that AirPods Pro 2 earbuds also come with a USB-C port, but that probably won’t happen this year. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said that the second-generation AirPods Pro are not expected to have a USB-C port and will instead have the same lightning port on this year’s model. The USB-C port change is rumored to be happening next year, though some leakers claim it could still happen in 2022.
Find my
The next generation AirPods Pro are expected to have a more advanced and useful Find My integration. Like AirTags, the charging case is expected to have a tracking feature that will help iPhone users track and locate their earbuds. In addition, the case is rumored to have speaker grilles on the bottom so that users can play a sound when the AirPods are left behind or aid in tracking.
AirPods Pro 2: What we want to see
- Hearing aid: On the second-generation AirPods Pro 2, we’d love to see features specifically designed for the hearing impaired. We’ve heard lots of stories about how the current generation of AirPods Pro helped people hear better, and we’d love to see it as a special feature.
- USB-C: While it’s not expected to arrive this year, we’d love to see a USB-C port included on the bottom of the charging case. We have long dreamed of a universe where we could all use one cable to charge our gadgets and accessories.
- Lossless Audio: Audio sounds great on the AirPods Pro, but there’s a lot more room for improvement. Since these are rather expensive earbuds, we hope to see a new lossless codec in the next generation. The new audio would allow us to better immerse ourselves while listening to music, watching videos or playing games.
- More earplug tips: The AirPods Pro was Apple’s first audio product that allowed users to swap their earbuds. This helped make the earbuds more comfortable and provided a more secure fit. We hope to see more size options, which can significantly improve the fit for even more people.
- Improved noise reduction: The current generation of AirPods are some of the best wireless earbuds for noise cancellation. Apple has an excellent algorithm, but it’s been a while since the first generation was introduced. We’d love to see significant improvements to further improve the experience for millions of people.
