Stylishly directed by Andrew Dosunmu (George’s mother, Where is Kira, Restless city), beauty, Like its protagonist, it is looking for itself and its purpose. The film broadly tells the story of a young singer who is just a short distance from the spotlight. When she is offered her lucrative deal by an avid label executive (Sharon Stone), Beauty must seriously consider whether she is ready to become a star. Her fame-even expectations for it-will change the already fragile dynamics of her island world.

Her parents are in the opposite position. Her mother (sharp Niecy Nash), a singer who has never had a commercial outbreak, wants to protect her daughter from her thirsty industry. Beauty signs a deal with Colony Records, which creates a torrent of new problems between her and her family. She travels to an unspecified city with Jasmine and this chapter of the couple’s life is given to us like a flash of music videos. Moments bleed from each other: hugging and teasing in bed disappears into studio rehearsals. The city excursion gives way to the star manager who guides her on how to avoid questions about race, relationships and sexuality.

As Beauty begins to feel more pressure from her label, the film shows a catastrophic event on the horizon. But that never happens. beauty We do not commit to a breathtaking climax. The catastrophic changes reported in the telegram early in the movie are subtle and creeping. Beauty becomes more confident, which helps her control her life and confront her father. But she is also more alienated from Jasmine and her family. Bradley’s flashy performance obscures the direction of Starlet’s development, rather than clarifying it.
