The two presidents discussed several interesting topics, including the fallout from the war in Ukraine, a news report said. Mr Iohannis also congratulated President Sandu on Moldova’s big step towards joining the European Union (namely obtaining EU candidate status) and reiterated Romania’s support on this journey.

Maia Sandu thanked Romania for supporting Moldova in its European endeavor.

She said European integration would mean “the consolidation of a society guided by the rule of law and respect for the rights of all people, entry into the richest and most prosperous market, investment and new opportunities for citizens”.

Ms Sandu said: “Romania’s support is all the more precious because it comes when we expect it most. For more than five months we have lived with the horrors of war on our side.

“Russia’s war against Ukraine has left our region in limbo. After Ukraine, Moldova is the country most affected by the war.”

In a joint statement, the Romanian president said: “We had consistent, applied discussions, focusing on many topics of bilateral interest.

“And as it should be, taking into account the deep, lasting and genuine ties between Romania and the Republic of Moldova, we are coordinating closely and looking together for the best solutions and ways forward.”

Romanian leader Iohannis said the Iasi-Ungheni-Chisinau gas pipeline is an essential element in the Republic of Moldova’s energy security architecture.

He said: “We know that the road ahead for Chisinau, towards European integration, is not an easy one.
