Neighbors Finale: 11 Easter Eggs, Throwbacks & References You May Have Missed | soaps

So much to talk about, when Neighbors came to a happy ending (Picture: Channel 5 / Fremantle)

The moment we all feared has finally arrived, like Neighbors has ever aired its last episode and is sadly no more.

The long-running soap came to a joyful end on Friday (July 29) when the residents of Ramsay Street got together for a street party to celebrate Toadie (Ryan Moloney) and Melanie Pearson’s (Lucinda Cowden) wedding.

Two popular couples reunite, with Terese Willis (Rebekah Elmaloglou) and Paul Robinson (Stefan Dennis) get back together, and Mike Young (Guy Pearce) confessed his love for Jane Harris (Annie Jones) 30 years after their legendary love affair.

Talk about a happy ending!

We also saw some returnees, such as Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan reprising their roles of Charlene and Scott, and Hollywood royalty Margot Robbie popped up too!

So much happened in the Neighbors finale, no one would blame you if you missed out on some little throwbacks, Easter eggs, and references. Fortunately for you, metro.co.uk was on the ball and picked up some interesting nods to the past, so without further ado, here’s what caught our eye.

The opening titles

Neighbors dropped their signature opening titles two weeks ago in favor of a celebratory title card to mark the show’s final episodes. However, the finale had a very unique intro sequence, with a series of title cards from each era of the show being shown on screen one last time.

The one above, used in the late 1990s, is a personal favorite.

Especially for you

Neighbors went very meta during Scott and Charlene’s highly anticipated comeback, when the legendary couple arrived on Ramsay Street after a three-decade absence, to the sound of Kylie and Jason’s signature hit Special For You.

Yes really.

Throwback to Charlene’s departure

Charlene returned in style, rocking to Ramsay Street in a green mini. Those who have been watching for a long time may remember that this is the vehicle she left the street in when she left all the way back in 1988.

Talk about coming full circle!

Throwback to Charlene’s debut scene

Scott and Charlene were stunned at how quiet Ramsay Street was when they arrived, unaware that everyone was at Toadie’s wedding.

Charlene soon had an idea, though, much to Scott’s horror, as she approached No. 24, climbed the stairs and stared at the wide-open window.

The scene was a tribute to Kylie’s very first scene as Charlene, who saw the character caught by future husband Scott, while trying to break into the property through this same window.

Well played, Neighbors. Well played.

Coff’s Harbour

As Charlene stepped out of her green mini, viewers were treated to a close-up of a key ring, which read: “Coffs Harbour”, a town in New South Wales, Australia.

So what’s the relevance here? Well, in the mythos of Neighbours, Charlene was born in Coffs Harbour, so this was a nice tribute to the legendary character’s birthplace.

Who were in the video messages?

Toadie received a special gift from Karl and Susan on his wedding day, in the form of video messages from some of his neighbors from a bygone era who couldn’t attend the ceremony.

Many familiar faces who previously starred on the show showed up, but have you seen them all? If not, don’t worry, because we did.

Libby Kennedy (Kym Valentine), Billy Kennedy (Jessie Spencer), Lance Wilkinson (Andrew Bibby), Tad Reeves (Jonathan Dutton), Stuart Parker (Blair McDonough), Naomi Canning (Morgana O’Reilly), Sharon Davies (Jessica Muschamp) , Joe Mangel (Mark Little), Beth Brennan (Natalie Imbruglia), Felicity Scully (Holly Valance), Steph Scully (Carla Bonner), and of course Donna Freedman (Margot Robbie) all appeared in the video messages.

The Shrugalero

Donna Freedman apologized during her special video message to the world her former neighbors for inventing the shrugalero.

If you don’t remember what the shrugalero is, then? how dare you we are happy to take you on a journey back in time to reacquaint you with the sublime garment invented by the aspiring fashion designer Donna herself.

The character went to the bank to apply for a loan in a now iconic scene as she and her boyfriend Kate Ramsay (Ashleigh Brewer) performed a fashion show in an attempt to obtain the money.

“It’s casual, it’s dressy and it practically folds into nothing!” Donna exclaimed on the top scene of the late 2000s.

All dear late Ramsay Street favorites revealed

Amid Susan’s powerful closing speech, she took a moment to reflect on the neighbors Ramsay Street has lost over the years, and how many of them were taken far too soon.

Doug Willis (Terence Donovan), Madge Bishop (Anne Charleston), Sonya Rebecchi (Eve Morey), and Hendrix Greyson (Ben Turland) were partying with their living loved ones, in a special order where they gave a taste of what an alternate reality would have looked like like this characters had lived.

Evil Finn Kelly (Rob Mills) was also seen, while Susan discussed the Erinsborough souls that were truly ‘lost’.

Who is the donor?

The question we all want to know the answer to! (Photo: Channel 5 / Fremantle)

Amy Greenwood (Jacinta Stapleton) was determined to have another baby, but as viewers know, she hasn’t been able to find a sperm donor, previously hoping someone she knew could have helped her.

But when she returned from her makeshift trip, she told Toadie she’ll know “in a few weeks” if “it’s been okay” for her, before touching her tummy.

Toadie, stunned, asked her if she’d found a donor, before demanding to know if it was someone they know. Amy, however, kept her mouth shut.

The question is: who exactly was it?

Phillip Martin returned – did you catch it?

Neighbor legend Phillip Martin (Ian Rawlings) returned in an instant and you’ll miss it at the very end of the episode, when he joined Toadie and Melanie at the street party.

The Neighbors theme tune mega mix

The end of an era as the neighbors’ themes all mixed together (Picture: Channel 5 / Fremantle)

The original — and for some, the very best — iteration of the Neighbors theme song, sung by Barry Crocker, was played during the show’s closing moments, as Ramsay Street residents old and new celebrated during the street party.

However, the closing credits featured what can only be described as the ultimate Neighbors mega mix, as different versions of the theme were mixed together over the years, as the show ended for good.

Barry’s original morphed into the Paul Norton and Wendy Stapleton version used in the late 1990s, before Janine Maunder’s iconic take on the theme—which defined the early 2000s era—sounded.

Garth Ploog’s iteration, used from 2015 to 2020, was also featured in the mega mix, before the latest and definitive version, sung by Bea Nillson star Bonnie Anderson, closed the show.

Greg Hind, whose rendition of the song was also used in the 90s, was absent, as was Sandra DeJong’s, whose sharp take on the classic theme remains one of the most unique.
