Feyenoord defender Tyrell Malacia has informed Lyon that he wants to participate Manchester United after the Red Devils hijacked the French club’s move for the Dutchman.

The 22-year-old had agreed to move to Lyon after his club accepted a £13 million fee from the Ligue 1 club for the Netherlands international.

However, United were told during the negotiations for Frenkie de Jong that Malacia had agreed with Lyon, as the defender shares an agent with the Barcelona star.

United moved quickly to improve Lyon’s offer and Malacia thought the offer was too good to reject.

According to L’Equipe the defender informed Lyon on Tuesday evening that he no longer wants to move to the club as he plans to move to Old Trafford instead.

Frank Arnesen, sporting director of Feyenoord, confirmed yesterday that the decision was in the hands of Malacia after United hijacked Lyon’s bid.

“The agreement is there. We are now waiting for Tyrell. If he says yes, a move to United is imminent,” said Arnesen.

Malacia could therefore become the first acquisition of the Erik ten Hag era, although United hopes to finalize a deal for De Jong this week.

It puts an end to the wait United fans have had for new signings, with supporters growing increasingly impatient in recent weeks as rivals Liverpool and Manchester City significantly expanded their roster.
