Governor El-Rufai has reaffirmed that he was the first to notify President Buhari of the terrorist threat to kidnap him and President Buhari.

A statement issued by his special adviser for media and communications, Muyiwa Adekeye, reads;

Malam Nasir El-Rufai hosted a live media chat in Hausa on Wednesday, July 27, 2022. One of the questions he asked related to the deteriorating security situation. His response included a reminder that for at least five years he has been calling for strong action against the terrorists who threaten our people, including bombing their sites.

He also said he informed President Muhammadu Buhari last Sunday about the seriousness of the security situation and informed him that the terrorists had threatened to kidnap the president and themselves.

A digitally active governor with a significant social media presence, he was the first to draw Mr. President’s attention to the viral video doing the rounds that day. It is up to him to share information with the President, without prejudice to any security or media communications the President may receive from other sources. The president had not seen the viral video at the time.

The suggestion and storylines by some of the media that this amounted to a failure by the security services to inform Mr. President is not what the governor specifically said in the Hausa language interview.

It is important at all times for the media to exercise restraint and ensure contextual accuracy in reporting, and avoid problems that may arise from or be lost in translation. We must not, through acts or omissions, glorify terrorists or demonize officials charged with the duty to contain and destroy them. Nigeria’s security challenges must not be politicized or used to mislead our people.”
