Today will see Manchester City and Liverpool will face off in the Community Shield ahead of the new Premier League season which kicks off next week.
The Community Shield is a charity event where usually the winner of the Premier League and the FA Cup fight against each other.
Manchester City’s domestic treble means they will instead face Liverpool, who finished second in the league and lost just one point.
It is not considered to be one of the most competitive competitions as other finals, but the competition helps raise money for various charities and supports lower-tier clubs.
What do the Community Shield winners get?
The top prize for Community Shield winners is the trophy.
Besides getting the trophy, it’s also a good way to get ahead of the new season by getting the first big win.
The final usually takes place the weekend before the Premier League kicks off, meaning victory could come at a good time to boost team morale.
However, it doesn’t always mean a good season for the winners as Manchester City became the first team in eight years to win the Community Shield and win the Premier League the following season.
Winning the match does not include progression to other tournaments and the prize pool for the two clubs is not as high as other tournaments, with the main focus being on raising money for charities and other football teams.
Funds are raised primarily through ticket sales and match programs, as well as sponsorships and TV deals.
The money is then given to teams in the lower divisions of British football, as well as to various charities, with each team participating in the first round of the FA Cup receiving £5,000 to go towards projects in their community.

Man City are certainly no strangers to the Shield.
In the past five years, they’ve won it twice and made it to the finals four times (including today’s game).

- 2019 – Manchester City (beats Liverpool)
- 2020 – Arsenal (beats Liverpool)
- 2021 – Leicester City (beats Manchester City)
Manchester United have the most wins in the Community Shield, winning 21 of the 30 finals they participated in.
Then follow Arsenal and Liverpool, who both have 15 wins.
