Heartstopper’s Yasmin Finney has revealed her dream role – she wants to be the first transgender Bond girl, and we’re up for it.
The Netflix star, 18, shot to stardomalmost overnight, after the coming-of-age series Heartstopper landed on the streaming service two months ago.
In fact, the entire cast – including Kit Connor and Joe Locke – has been catapulted to fame, with the TV show achieving great success and all extended for two more seasons.
Yasmin plays Elle Argent, a trans student who navigates life, love and friendships after transitioning from Truham Boys’ School to Girls’ Higgs School.
Since the show aired, Yaz has landed a role in the Doctor Who 60th anniversary celebrations and confirmed that her character is also trans – but the sky is the limit for her and she wants to go full blockbuster next time.
The teenage star told the mirror: ‘I would love to be a trans Bond girl or just a Bond girl in general. I like James Bond.
“Every time I watch a Bond movie, I think I’d love to be that cool, sexy Bond girl that’s never been done before.”
Yasmin added that Caroline Cossey has been an inspiration to her after seeing her as an extra in 1981’s For Your Eyes Only.
Caroline, now 60, is also trans and has been open about the profound impact the press has had on her mental health.
Yasmin says Caroline — who was the first trans woman to model for Playboy in the early 1990s — inspired her “to be the positive representation James Bond never had.”
“There are people in the industry who were transphobic, but now they aren’t because of the way things are changing. I’d rather not fight it and be part of it,” she added.
And being a part of it is definitely what Yaz does, because not only did she recently attend her first London Trans+ Pride, she gave an empowering speech to a crowd of thousands, to remind everyone that transgender people are ‘not going anywhere’.
She also took home the Pride Icon award at the 2022 Attitude Awards, which she called an “honour.”
As if that wasn’t enough, she’s amassed a slew of celebrity fans in a short space of time, also revealing that Sam Smith—whose Bond song Writing’s On The Wall won a Golden Globe in 2016—followed her on social media.
“Sam followed me recently. It was someone I listened to at school when I was being bullied,” Yasmin said.
Shooting for Season 2 of Heartstopper is expected to begin later this year, with fans already having sleepless nights of excitement for their favorite characters to return.
In the coming seasons, viewers of the show – which is based on Alice Oseman’s graphic novels – hope for a romance between BFFs Elle and Tao Xu (William Gao).
Heartstopper is now streaming on Netflix.
