Jurgen Klopp denounces treatment of Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez: “It’s a joke”

The £85million has faced some criticism for his performance since joining the club, despite scoring four goals from the bench against RB Leipzig earlier this month.

Nunez was again named as one of the replacements for Liverpool’s Community Shield clash against Manchester Cityand was introduced with a goal from his side thanks to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s deflected strike.

Julian Alvarez equalized for City but Nunez went on to win a penalty for side as Ruben Dias blocked his header with one arm before the 23-year-old got on the scoresheet in extra time. to seal a 3-1 win for Liverpool.

Klopp praised the striker and the impact he made from the bench, defending Nunez against some of the comments that have come his way in recent weeks.

“It was good, it was really good. It is clear that it will get better with time,” said Klopp.

“We live in a world where everyone is judged at first sight and that is of no use to anyone, but it happens constantly.

“In the first few games (of the pre-season) we didn’t even come close to today’s fitness level and when he came on we passed every ball so he could chase it and after the third ball he was completely killed and then everyone judged his first touches and things like this.

“It’s just a joke, but we have to live with that, he will handle it brilliantly. We are patient and we know that he can do good things.

He added: “The goal was clearly the icing on the cake, so very happy for him.

“You could see in his face, you could see in all his teammates how happy the guys are for him and that is a very good sign after the short time he has been with us.”
