Postal delivery services in the UK have always been limited to six days a week.
Opening on Sunday, the Christian day of rest, was always a no-no. No one worked on Sundays – not even your local postman.
But things changed a few years ago when Royal Mail decided Sundays weren’t so bad after all.
This came around the time that high street stores started opening their weekly opening hours on Sundays as well.
So does Royal Mail actually deliver on Sundays? Here’s what you need to know…
Does Royal Mail deliver on Sundays?
For some time now, Royal Mail hadn’t delivered anything on Sundays – and then you usually still don’t get letters and other correspondence.
That doesn’t mean the company is closing the store completely, though.
Royal Mail now has a Sunday delivery service which started in 2014 on a trial basis but has now been rolled out to around 12,000 online retailers using their Tracked24 services for parcel delivery.
This means that anyone who orders on a Saturday through a website that uses that service may be able to have their goods the next day, if they choose that option.
Royal Mail started their service in response to Amazon’s popularity, who has always offered Sunday delivery (via Royal Mail) if you pay for the service.
Chief commercial officer Nick Landon said: “Royal Mail transforms to ensure we deliver what you need now and in the future.
“This change will help thousands of businesses provide their customers with the most convenient delivery options and compete and grow.”
In addition to delivery, you can also collect Royal Mail parcels from a collection point on Sundays if a delivery card has been left for you.
You can use the website to find your nearest collection point, and also the Sunday opening hours as information about weekend service updates.
