Sheriff Scott Knudson of the St Croix County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to The Sun that the deceased was a 17-year-old from Minnesota.

The other four victims are all in their 20s, Knudson said.

All other victims were transported to local hospitals in critical condition.

According to Knudson, the suspect initially fled but is now in custody.

Officials said it is too early to say the incident was random.

Knudson said the suspect was a 52-year-old man, also from Minnesota.

The suspect was also tubing with his own group at the time of the incident, he said.

“We think he continued up the river,” Knudson said. “But we did find him with his group of tubers at the exit of the river.”

It is believed the suspect attempted to flee the crime scene by descending the river.

“We think he floated away.”

Police are asking people to avoid the area as part of the investigation.

“We’re actually in the process of diverting some of the tube traffic around our crime scene,” Knudson said.

“That alone creates some challenges in getting them off the river and collecting what we can in a hard-to-reach area.”
