Actress Abigail Thorn calls on producers to “have more courage” when it comes to including transgender expressions in their scripts.

The actress and YouTuber, who are about to star in the next Sky Series Django (based on a 1966 movie), are writing her own play, The Prince. Metro.co.uk She states that after the producer was “cowardly” to the decision to include them, she saw the role of a great transformer that was written into the script and cut from the script.

“Things are definitely getting better,” she explained. “I think transgender people have more roles. We’re creating ours right now. That’s a good thing. I think writers are definitely bold. More and more scripts contain transgender characters. Writers are also good at saying, “I want transgender people to come and help shape this.”

“And again, what this country is particularly good at-I go up for the role of trance and the Sith[gender] The role, mainly the Sith role. It’s really good that casting assistants and casting directors are hiring transgender for their sysparts. We are not just stuck in a rut.

“Where I want it-first of all, representatives don’t help with things like equal rights or NHS reforms. Good wording, but you can’t pay the rent. , The writer is definitely bold [but] In my experience, producers can still be a little timid.

“There are quite a few times I’ve been given a script that has a really, really good character, has something really powerful to say about transness, or has a really well written trans character, and Everyone gets excited about it Working on it, I often played the role of a consultant and did a lot of work to help develop it, and as it approached time, the producer said, “About this. I’m not sure, “and it cuts. ‘

Abigail added that there was a time when she stood side by side in her hand to find out that the producer had cut the scene.

“I want the producer to be a little more courageous and say,’I don’t know, but let’s do it,'” she added.

Despite some negative experiences, Abigail states:

In recent years there has been a great deal of debate about whether it is okay for cisgender people to play the role of transgender characters. Last year, Eddie Redmayne admitted that playing a transgender woman in a Danish girl was a “mistake” for him. Benedict Cumberbatch also says that playing a non-binary character in Zoolander 2 “backfired.”

Abigail says there aren’t that strict rules, but actors need to consider whether they are best suited for their role.

“I’m reluctant to throw the commandments from Mount Olympus!” She said.

“I think it also depends a bit. For example, if you have a Sith woman who plays a trance man, or a Sith man who plays a trance woman, people look at the poster, the man dresses, and the people are trance. When we consider a gender woman to be a dressed man, it kills us.

“I understand that acting is an industry and that moral reasons aren’t the only reasons people think, but myself. For example, a cis man was offered the role of a transgender woman. I think. They may have a reason. I hope they will help them pass on that role to someone else.

Eddie Redmayne

“But I don’t want to say that casting can be a bit interesting, so I can’t say I can’t do it. Think of a writer like Caryl Churchill. Her play deliberately casts people” in the wrong direction. ” You must to do something before you go on. In other words, white men will play the role of black women, and people will change in the process of the play. I never want to say so far, as there may be clever and artistic reasons why it can be done. But as a general rule of thumb, if a Sith actor plays the “wrong gender”, I think there is a moral reason he wants to decline to play the role of trance.

Abigail pointed out that many actors came out earlier saying they played a role they didn’t do now in the past, saying, “I think we’re in a place where things are improving rapidly. I will. “

Last January, Abigail appeared as a transgender woman on her YouTube channel PhilosophyTube.

Since then, she said she had an “overwhelmingly positive” experience in the acting industry, noting that “it was really nice to see how people adapted.”

She currently balances acting and writing on YouTube, explaining: [the two jobs] The play is filmed and worn, so together [streaming service] nebula.

“If the play goes well, the streaming service that outsources the play is a kind of new area, so I think it could be a game changer for the acting industry. If it goes well, people will create new projects. I hope there will be a new space for you to do.

“My audience is wonderfully supportive,” she added, balancing the two jobs. “They have long known that I am a play and love my writing and acting, so it’s great to see how supportive they are.”

Sky series Django doesn’t have a release date yet. Tickets for the Prince of the Southwark Theater are currently on sale.
