A woman was fatally struck by a New York City subway train after falling onto the tracks at Grand Central Terminal, police said Wednesday.
The 20-year-old woman somehow fell on the tracks when a No. 7 train approached shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday, a police spokesman said.
The train driver was unable to brake in time to avoid hitting the woman, police said. She was pronounced dead on the spot.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said in a: tweet that the train service was temporarily suspended while emergency services arrived on the scene.
The incident marks the second fatal accident on the New York City subway in two weeks. Earlier this month, a man was dragged to his death after his clothes and foot got caught in a subway door while trying to get off a train in Brooklyn.
Transit officials earlier this year announced a plan to install safety barriers at three of the city’s subway stations in a pilot program designed to prevent deaths on the rail. But the MTA said a survey of the 472 stations in the subway system found that only 41 of them can be equipped with the barriers today.
