Seaside property seized from a black couple during the Jim Crow era was returned to their descendants

Los Angeles beachfront assets seized by the government from black couples during the Jim Crow era were returned to their descendants in the first such action by US authorities.

Called Bruce Beach, the property was purchased by Charles and Willa Bruce in 1912 and turned into a resort that other black families can visit without facing racist harassment.

However, in 1924, Manhattan Beach officials resolved to blame the land through expropriation, arguing that public parks needed land, the New York Times reported.

Bruce filed a proceeding, but it failed and they lost their business. They were paid only $ 14,500.

Los Angeles County has resolved to return the land to its descendants in order to “correct past mistakes.”
