There is nothing to confirm the Snapdragon 778G + chipset for phones (1)

Carl Pei, Founder and CEO of Nothing, continues the next Nothing Phone (1) teaser campaign, dropping information left and right every few days prior to the launch event on July 12. Today I have confirmed that the device is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G + Premium Midrange SoC.

This isn’t really surprising, as the Nothingphone (1) prototype was discovered on Geekbench with that exact chipset a few days ago, but it’s good to get official confirmation. Obviously, high-end chips are much more expensive than when Pei co-founded OnePlus years ago. The OnePlus One was able to launch at a price $ 100 cheaper than the rumored Nothing phone, while using the best SoC of the day. Hashtag inflation.

Nothing is said that the Snapdragon 778G + is “custom-tuned” for the phone (1), but it doesn’t really explain what that means. This is a familiar metaphor that OnePlus has used in the past, so don’t take it too seriously. Interestingly, the “+” in the “Snapdragon 778G +” seems to come from support for wireless and reverse wireless charging.

Qualcomm does not say that it has added these features to a phone-only SoC (1). This is unbelievable, but not impossible. So far, no other device has such a feature using the Snapdragon 778G or 778G +.

Carl Pei mentioned a lot about why his company chose the midrange chipset for their first phone. For example, “Telephones perform well for common tasks, and more powerful chips are diminishing returns.” Fair enough, but if the Nothing phone (1) could still reach the same price point, he would have chosen the Snapdragon 8 Gen1. Unfortunately, that’s not the case, so Pei chose the next best option to keep prices low. And the rest is marketing.
