The 7-day moving average for the community case is 1297 more than the same day last week. As of Thursday it was 6114, but last Thursday it was 4817.

There are also 411 Covid-19 infected individuals, including 6 patients in intensive care units or highly dependent treatment rooms. The average age of people hospitalized for the virus is 63 years.

The total number of deaths from Covid-19 is currently 1522. The 7-day moving average of reported deaths is 13.

Of the 19 people who died last week, two were from Northland, three were from the Auckland region, and three were from Waikato. One was from Bay of Plenty. One was from Hawke’s Bay. The two are from the Wellington area. One was from Nelson-Marlboro. The four were from Canterbury. And the two were from the South.

The two were in their 50s. The three were in their 60s. One was in the 70’s. Six were in their 80s. And seven were over 90 years old. Of these people, 11 were women and 8 were men.

With a 1:00 pm update, the ministry will announce the total number of people who died “in Covid” during a particular time period. That does not necessarily mean that the virus killed those people, but that they were positive within or shortly after their death.

The ministry later provided detailed information on the causes of these deaths on its website. You can read an explanation of how this works here.

In Sunday cases, the total number of confirmed cases of Aotearoa has been seen since the pandemic exceeded 1.3 million and rose to 1,331,157 on Thursday.

There were 42,782 active cases (identified in the last 7 days and not yet considered to have recovered).

This shows that as a modeling show, Omicron’s BA.5 variant is starting to become a “snowball”.

The Institute for Environmental Sciences (ESR) currently expects the BA.5 variant to overtake BA.2 as the dominant strain of Covid in Aotearoa by the end of July.

Models suggest that BA.5 can account for more than half of daily infections in just two weeks.
