People trying to use the internet in Gore may experience problems.

Chorus reports that up to 1,700 broadband fiber connections were affected in the Gore and Clutha districts after a cable was damaged.

External communications chief Steve Pettigrew said the damage was caused by contractors cutting through the fiber optic cable while installing a water pipe.

The company’s interruption card says the error was reported Wednesday at 1:05 p.m.

Technicians were on site and working on the damaged cable, which runs parallel to street lighting cables.

Pettigrew said the cable was cut on the highway on the south side of Fonterra’s Edendale site.

It was hoped the problem would be fixed by 4.30pm, Pettigrew said.

The Gore District Council reported on Wednesday that Chorus had informed it that it was unable to repair the cable until Thursday morning due to health and safety risks.

The board reported Yrless Plus Ltd had informed him that a network fiber cable had been cut between Invercargill and Gore.

“Unfortunately, this means that we do not currently have access to internet or telephone lines over our services if you try to find us.”
