Take the temperature of sick leave

Take the temperature of sick leave

Podcast: Details

We’re recording sick leave more than ever, but are you really embarking on one of the most important lessons of a pandemic? Are you at home when you are sick?

For years with colds, the flu, and other colds, we have been expected to become soldiers, take medicine, and go to work, school, and social events.

Then came the Covid-19. Then I received a loud and clear message to stay home when I was ill.

But is it realistic for everyone?

What is sick leave?

Jarod Haar, a professor of human resource management at AUT, says he has sick leave to help people recover.

“Hey, if you can’t come to work because of illness for some reason-whether it’s pulled muscle or the flu, Covid-you’re at a disadvantage and unpaid while you’re there. Recovery is to say that it will never be.

“As we get smarter, in fact, bringing a sick person to work can cause more people in the workplace to get sick, sneezing, coughing, and spreading bacteria. You may have noticed that it is harmful because of the sneeze. I need a break. ”

How much sick leave do you have?

Employees (most of whom earn wages and salaries) are paid at least 10 days of illness per year. Previously it was 5 days, but last year the government made a change to double the minimum qualifications.

Some workers offer minimum or unlimited sick leave.

However, paid sick leave is only available if you have been working for 6 months. This is a problem for those who have seasonal or temporary work. The government has indicated that it is considering further legislative changes to allow people to take sick leave from day one.

Sick leave is also a problem for contractors. There are 350,000 people in the “self-employed without employees” category, and these people do not take sick leave. This is another area where the government is considering possible solutions to ensure that contractors receive additional protection.

How long do you take sick leave?

According to Statistics New Zealand, 44,200 employers were absent from work for a full week due to illness, illness, or injury. This is a two-thirds increase compared to the same period last year. It’s also the best in the last 5 years. Statistics New Zealand believes that the increase in Omicron cases in the community has skyrocketed.

According to Statistics New Zealand, the number of people who said they worked less than usual due to illness, illness or injury also increased by 21%.

What happens if you make the most of your sick leave?

If you run out of sick days and get sick again, it’s up to your employer to decide whether they will continue to pay you.

Employment lawyer Barbara Bucket states that employers need to be fair and rational when considering the situation of people. She says some employees may be able to dispute refusing to give them any more paid sick leave because they are at a disadvantage. Takes time and money.

If your employer offers unlimited sick leave, or if you have at least 10 days or more, this may not be a problem. However, employers can request a medical certificate at a cost to make sure people are unable to work.

Do sick people still work?

They may be. We are in the midst of a living cost crisis, and Haar says people may not be able to afford unpaid sick leave. According to international research, sick workers who are no longer taking paid leave, or contractors who are not paid if they do not work, will continue to work during their illness, according to Haar. According to Haar, these people are likely to be less productive and are at risk of spreading the cold and the flu to others. However, some are facing considerable financial pressure.

Banks and landlords don’t say, “I think this week was a bad week. Don’t worry about paying your mortgage or rent. It’s up to me.” It’s not working well yet, “says Haar.
