In the horror world, certain names stand out as legends of this genre. Robert Englund is undoubtedly in it and has his iconic turn as a serial killer Freddy Krueger in the A Nightmare on Elm Street movie series.
When he joined the Stranger Things cast, the 75-year-old continued to show a supernatural trend, making his debut as the old Victor Creel in Volume 1 of Season 4, among viewers with a horribly slashed eyeball. Caused a tremor.
Metro.co.uk I recently spoke to Barry Gower, head of the series’ Makeup Effects division. He elaborated on the complexity of creating a prosthesis, which took hours to apply to Robert’s head at one time.
He also emphasized how special it is to spend time with Robert and hear anecdotes about his career. He idolized an American actor and boasted a “shrine” of Freddy Krueger’s poster in his teenage bedroom to serve it.
Jamie Campbell Bower’s villain Vecna and Barry, who was the brain behind the design and creation of his team, said: Excited to do that, we thought it would be a great experience to create his appliance. But at that time I didn’t expect to be Robert Englund.
“It wasn’t until we talked about make-up design that they told us that it was Robert. From the perspective of creatures and make-up effects and horror fans, we were like candy store kids. We were the moon. I couldn’t believe I was going to work with Robert Englund. “
Barry, who previously worked on games such as Game of Thrones and No Time to Die, said he and many of his colleagues (including Duncan German, who carved Victor’s prosthesis) were on Elm Street. Having explained that the nightmare was of that generation, that growth was a huge part of our teens.
“There was a shrine on the wall above the bed in the bedroom, and there were all Freddy Krueger posters and magazine cuttings. I was building myself as Freddy Krueger as a teenager in my bedroom. Being like my grown-up idol, having the opportunity to work with Robert was a huge cou for us, “he said.
Aside from the pressure of working with horror icons, Barry had to create a “fantasy” sliced with his own eyes after the character was devastated, so how could he devise Victor’s make-up? “We made an instrument with a dome-shaped cavity above Robert’s eyes under the instrument, so he could actually open the eyelids and he had some small tiny holes in the prosthesis. I was able to see through, “Barry elaborated.
To be able to believe the effect, they needed to “make up his face” with his eyes turned further back. The appliance was placed on his nose and covered his hairline to the line of his beard.
Barry described how other actors struggled with the amount of prosthesis that Robert had to apply to his role.
But given Robert’s extensive experience with make-up effects chairs, “it was a walk in the park for him.”
The head of the Makeup Effects department lovingly described the memories he and his team shared with Freddy Krueger’s stars as a “great experience.”
“He was telling stories and anecdotes from his career, talking about some of our peers, and talking about his experiences at other companies,” he recalled.
“I am very grateful that I have received so many wonderful gifts from the entire Stranger Things 4 experience.”
