A highly beloved community hub, the Kawaia Sports Club, was destroyed in a fire on Friday.

Dave Walsh, president of the Kawaia community, said the fire broke out around 3 pm.

“The club is gone and she’s burned out.”

According to Walsh, no one was injured and no clue as to why the fire broke out at a facility owned by the Otorohanga District Council.

“It’s a real loss.”

He said the facility was a venue for many community activities.

“Used for many things in the town,” including weddings, funerals, bowls, and exercise classes for pensioners.

The club was also used to watch big rugby games on TV, but there was a night of food and drink, one night a week.

“It was a real community hub,” Walsh said.

He wanted insurance to cover at least part of the loss and help see another facility set up.

Walsh paid tribute to the local volunteer Kawaia Fire Brigade who extinguished the flames.

“They are amazing.”
