The ski resort opens with great expectations for heavy snowfall

Lake Ohaw Lodge and Ohaus Norfield are ready to welcome the first skiers and borders of the season.

A ski resort overlooking Lake Ohau opens today, and co-owner Mike Neilson said there is a “great base” with even more snow on the weekends.

Neilson advised skiers and snowboarders to pay attention to seasonal weather forecasts and snow reports that are expected to last until October 9.

“We expect a fairly strong snow year,” he said.

With a steady surge in season passes, lodge bookings have “significantly increased” over the previous year, Neilson said.

The core business of ski resorts has always come from New Zealanders. A significant number of reservations have been made by the North Islanders this season.

This year, the ski resort is welcoming the international ski team to Ohaw for the first time since 2019. The US and Norwegian teams have been booked for training at the Waitaki Ski Resort.

“We are having a very strong year in terms of demand.”

Neilson and his wife, Louise, spend about 60 ski seasons each year at lodges and ski resorts.

Enrollment and training began earlier this week, but the Neilsons were still looking for someone to fill some positions and advertised the lodge waiters. Ski resort.
