Call Bethel: Times research team delivers a powerful podcast

Call Bethel

This new Times award-winning five-part series The investigative team is investigating decades of alleged child sexual abuse in Jehovah’s Witnesses.

It all started last August when the team received a tip-off claiming that the church had a secret database of allegations of abuse.

They decided to follow that lead, followed by a year-long investigation into the extent to which evidence of child abuse among Jehovah’s Witnesses was ignored and concealed by global organizations.

The two episodes released so far are promising, and host Catherine Rushton explained to listeners how the research team followed the first lead and subsequent unexpected events.

If you like this, another Times podcast worth listening to is Bed of Rye’s first season about Britain’s largest secret police scandal.

New episodes of Cole Bethel will drop every Tuesday.

Calling Bethel is a disastrous result of a year-long investigation into the extent to which evidence of child abuse among Jehovah's Witnesses was ignored and concealed.

First person

This is a new offering from the New York Times Opinion section, examining how individual experiences of people shaped their views on the issue of political hot buttons.

Organized by journalist Luis García Navarro, this series consists of in-depth one-on-one interviews with people who are somehow directly involved in some of America’s biggest controversies currently in the news. ..

For example, in one episode, a woman who was a teenager against abortion began to experience an unwanted pregnancy. In another episode, there are advocates of gun control who find themselves on the same side as the NRA with respect to New York’s gun permit system.

Given that the podcast was created by the US “Record Paper”, the immediate issue in each episode is, of course, US-centric, but don’t put it off – host Garcia-Navarro’s careful attention. So far, each episode is worth listening to, as it leads to conversations that add nuances beyond procrastination interview style headlines and social media hottakes.

New episodes will be published every Thursday.

Going West Audio

Going West is one of New Zealand’s longest-running literary festivals. I recently learned that since it began in 1996, every word in every festival has been carefully recorded and stored in the Henderson Library. ).

When the pandemic broke out, the Going West team decided to share the festival’s archives with the world in the form of podcasts.

So far, we have released four seasons of remarkable content from the history of the festival, and I think more seasons will come in the future.

In a prominent recent episode of the new season, acclaimed author Kelly Hume talks and reads two excerpts from her (yet) unpublished second novel, Bait (second). Excerpts will not be resolved sadly).

Other highlights of the early season include business journalist Rod Oram’s fascinating oral history of Tamaki Makaurau and Maurice Gee reading an excerpt from the novel Going West (named the festival). included.

So far, there are about 50 episodes, all of which can be accessed with your favorite podcasting app.
