Firefighters are fighting fire in a historic mansion near the small town of Darfield in Canterbury.

A New Zealand spokesman for fires and emergencies said they were called into a “second warning building fire” at 10:53 am.

A spokesman said there were three fire trucks on the scene, about 60 kilometers west of Christchurch, with additional trucks along the way.

Neighbor Dorne Broughton said the fire completely destroyed Waireka’s mansion in Waireka Rd, a suburb of Darfield. The historic house was built in 1871.

“It’s sad because it’s over 100 years old,” she said.

“It’s a lot of history.”

She said no one was injured in the fire.

A police spokesman said he was informed of the fire at 11:04 am. The fire was “well involved,” they said.
