A drunk man who fled the scene of a crash near Allanton was arrested by police after he tried to flag down a passing motorist.
Dunedin Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said when the man was seen walking along State Highway One at 8pm last night after abandoning his crashed vehicle.
The 38-year-old was driving along Center Rd when he lost control of the vehicle on the corner at the Outram exit.
He turned around and the car veered into a nearby field and landed on its roof, Sergeant General Bond said.
The man then tried to flag down a passing motorist who was heading towards Allanton on foot.
The motorist was alarmed by the man's apparent drunken state and called the police.
When police found the man, he underwent a breath test.
He recorded a breath alcohol level of 813mcg, more than three times the legal limit, but he chose to take a blood sample.
His driver's license was suspended for 28 days.
