Accountant Sophie Phipps started wearing a pair of Crocs as a joke.

“They started as home shoes, then they became walk-in shoes for daycare, until now my everyday shoes.”

Now the owner of the Carterton accounting firm has started her own Croc charms company Snazzy.

“My accounting business is obviously quite serious in nature and as much as I love doing it, I just felt like I needed something fun and exciting to work on,” she said.

Crocs was founded in 2002, but the popularity of the shoes took off as the world emerged from the pandemic. Celebrities like Justin Bieber, Post Malone, and Nicki Minaj have all spiked clog sales — and Balenciaga and Crocs recently teamed up for Balenciaga’s Spring 2022 collection.

In the first quarter of 2021, Crocs stock value rose to NZ$745 million in revenue, up 61% from the previous year.

To spice up her own Crocs, Phipps wanted to add some Croc charms, which clip onto the holes of the shoes to give the pair a personal touch.

But after some research, she discovered that there weren’t many places in New Zealand where you can buy Croc charms – so she took matters into her own hands.

“It’s a bit of a niche market.

“I love being able to charm my Crocs – it’s an opportunity for a bit of your personality to shine through.”

The charms come from a supplier abroad, but Phipps is looking for a manufacturer in NZ so she can design and make her own charms.

The charms come from a supplier abroad, but Phipps is looking for a manufacturer in NZ so she can design and make her own charms.

She launched her own company on Thursday, saying it had been months in the making.

The charms she sells include French fries, coffee cups, skulls, sneakers and avocados.

She orders the products from abroad and was looking for a local manufacturer so she can design the charms and have them made here in NZ.

She had already invested $2000 of her own money to get Snazzy up and running, which included purchasing inventory, branding, label printer, courier bags, and printing thank you cards and stickers.

It was a very different business from her accounting firm Sophisticated Accounting, which is her full-time job.

She initially started that business as an afterthought in April 2019 after working at accounting firms for seven years, but quit her 9-5 job and went full-time in October 2020.

“Starting up Snazzy was effortless. Part of my accounting job is helping new businesses start up, so it’s second nature to me,” Phipps said.
