Actor Jarod Rawiri (Ngāti Whanaunga, Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Te Uri o Hau, Ngāti Hine), is an Auckland actor who starred in Shortland Street and The Brokenwood Mysteries. He’s about to take the stage in the Auckland Theater Company’s production of Eugene O’Neill’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Long Day’s Journey into Night (July 5-30). He lives with his wife Dolina Wehipeihana and their four children aged 11-24.

I wish I knew 10 years ago…

About buying real estate. If I had been smart enough to buy a house in Auckland ten years ago, things would be a little different now. We only recently managed to save enough money to convince a bank to give us a loan. Buying a house in Auckland has been a challenge, that’s for sure.

I also wish I had started my te reo journey 10 years ago. For most of my life I’ve gotten away with the basics and that was okay, but over the past three years I’ve come to take it seriously and take on the challenge of studying I reo. I’m getting better and I’m on a conversational level now. Our children are fluent and my wife and I often cheat and use our daughter to help us with assignments.

I wish I could swap lives with…

I know who I wouldn’t trade lives with – my character Jamie in Long Days’ Journey into Night He’s the opposite of me – I have a loving family, I know who I am and I’m passionate about acting and performing. But Jamie is none of those things. So it was a pleasure to ask those questions, to see beyond myself and connect with someone so different from me.

If it should be Taika . probably the only person I would swap lives with [Waititi] because he gets to do the work he wants to make, he’s done it so well and he’s really charming.

I wish I could eat every day..

A meat and cheese pie. I really have a weakness for pies, but especially meat pies and especially meat and cheese pies. But going for a walk every day wouldn’t be so good for me, so after taking care of myself for two weeks and going to the gym, I’ll take one as a treat.

I wish I could live in…

Kaiaua, a small town just outside Thames. It’s where my family comes from and where we got married. We did think about buying a house there and taking a boat to make the commute to Auckland easier, but it didn’t quite work out.

The person I wish was on a banknote is…

Give me Wina Cooper. Not only is she an icon, but my friend from drama school, Miriama McDowell, is playing Dame Whina in the new movie, Whina. I haven’t seen it yet, but my son and Miriama’s daughter attend the same school that has a fundraising screening, so I’m looking forward to it.

The sound I wish I could never hear again is…

The word “appease”. I really don’t like how loud and piercing it sounds and I hate being kept quiet. Plus, I don’t think it’s ever really effective at getting people to shut up.

I wish New Zealand was more….

Geographically closer to the rest of the world. Most of the time I love that we are this small, self-contained nation at the bottom of the world. But sometimes I wish we could physically pick up New Zealand and bring it a little closer to the action. I have a family in Australia and the US and have to travel for work so it would be nice not to have to spend so much time in the air.
