Add bots to Discord servers

When you set up a Discord server, you want a way to enforce rules. If people are spouting nonsense all the time, everything will quickly turn into chaos. If you don’t have the time to set up moderators, you might want to check out a Discord bot that can do it all. Lucky for you, there are quite a few that can do just that. Let’s talk about adding a bot to a Discord server.

What are Discord bots?

Bots on Discord are programmable tools that communicate with your server and allow you to automate specific tasks. For example, you could have a bot that automatically rewards users for posting a certain number of posts or a bot that automatically tracks when users delete a post. There are countless tasks you can program for Discord bots on your server.

Now Discord bots behave like server members, at least when added. You need to invite them to your server just like any other member and then give them access and permission to do what you want them to do.

Bot Commands

Some bots perform specific actions when you type a particular message (or “bot command”) in a specific channel. That channel needs to be set up so that those bots will respond to those bot commands.

An example of a ‘bot command’.

For example, this Discord bot “OkitaBot” is set up to respond to the bot command “%jp-profile” in this particular channel. Whenever a user types that into the Message field at the bottom, the bot will publicly pull out its gamer profile.

Add bots to a Discord server

Discord bots, as mentioned, need to be invited to a server before they can be set up. Here’s how to add a bot to your server.

Invite the bot to your Discord server

Start by opening a browser and going to the bot’s website. For this exercise we are going to: dyno.gg to invite dyno to our “Curt Server” on Discord.

go to the website and log in

On the Discord bot site, click Login with Discord. This button looks different for different bots; for example on MEE6it just says Login. If you’re already signed in to Discord on your computer, this should automatically redirect you to the bot management interface; if not, you’ll need to manually enter your Discord credentials.

What are some good Discord bots?

When we say there are a lot of Discord bots, we mean it. The number of Discord bots you can invite to your server is growing day by day.

That said, not all bots are created equal! Here are a few that are quite popular.

MEE6

MEE6 arguably the most famous Discord bot of all time. Like most other general purpose bots, MEE6 has many useful features, including moderation, custom commands, leveling, and more.

With MEE6 Premium, their paid subscription service, you can access additional features such as automatic moderation, variable XP win rates, reaction rolls and more. There are many plugins available with MEE6 Premium.

When it comes to customization, MEE6 is incredibly versatile and covers many of the most basic needs for a Discord server.

dyno is a fully customizable moderation tool that also functions as a general Discord bot. There are numerous bot commands available, and the “modules” available on the backend include things like: Action Log, Auto delete, car rolls, car banand car mod. There are other non-moderation features built into Dyno bot, but what it is most famous for is its suite of moderation features.

Dyno-bot makes it easy to automate the moderation process if you spend the time putting it on your Discord server. If you want to spend less time looking for the perfect mods for your server, Dyno will definitely do it – and maybe even be more reliable!

Carl-bot

Carl-bot is our favorite Discord bot for logs. Like Dyno, Carl bot has an extensive set of moderation features. It also has useful tools such as: reaction rolls, custom assignments, welcome messagesand levels.

That said, the way Carl bot implements logs is great. It is very easy to set up after you invite the bot to your server, and it will track all the action that takes place within your server. If you are away for a day, logs allow you to see everything that happened within your server.

Yet Another Common Discord Bot (YAGPDB)

YAGPDB is one of the most popular Discord bots for notifications and automated moderation. It is super easy to use and can automate the criminal justice process for rule violations. Reaction Roles and custom assignmentslike the other common Discord bots we mentioned, can be set up with YAGPDB.

YAGPDB is a very useful bot when you need help in moderating a server and making it an enjoyable experience. The fact that you can set it up to notify you when there is new feed activity is also one of the reasons many choose to add it to their servers.
